Tips and tricks for installation issues

  • Is your smartphone plugged in? Before you can install the update, your smartphone must be connected to its AC charger. Otherwise, you'll see an error on your desktop and you won't be able to install.
  • Do you have an Unlocked GSM phone?  This update will not work for AT&T, Cingular or Rogers branded phones even if you are on their networks.  The installer will stop you from running this update.
  • Do you have 20-26MB free space on your device? This update requires at least 20 MB free memory available on your smartphone. Palm recommends 26MB of free space to ensure proper operation. Check free memory.

Device is in a looping reset after the update

Is your smartphone looping through the Palm logo screen, resetting itself over and over again? This may be happening because you selected a different language for your device than was previously selected before you ran the update. This can cause a looping reset after the update is complete.

If this is the case, exit the updater on your desktop PC. Then perform a hard reset on your smartphone.
Then perform a HotSync operation to restore backed-up data to your device

You can confirm that the update was completed successfully by checking the Phone Information screen (here's how).

Error: "Device Needs Power"

The text of this error message is:
Device Needs Power
Important: Please plug the device into the power outlet.

If you see this message, plug your smartphone into its AC charger, and make sure the charger is connected to a powered outlet. This software requires your device to be connected throughout the update process.

Error: "The free data storage space on the device is very low ..." (on the smartphone) or "Not Enough Memory on Your Device" (on the PC)

  • On your smartphone, the text of this error message is:
    Warning
The free data storage space on the device is very low. Delete applications or data.
  • On your desktop PC, the text of this error message is:
Not Enough Memory on Your Device

Important: Your device does not have enough free memory to complete the update. The updater needs 20MB of available memory. Please remove any large image, unused applications or files and try again.

Before beginning the update, you need to have at least 20 MB free memory available on your smartphone. Palm recommends 26MB of free space to ensure proper operation. Check free memory.

You have two options:

  • Delete enough data and applications to make space (info).
  • Or, synchronise to back up data and then perform a hard reset (info) to clear the contents of your device.

Error: "Device Connection Failed"

The text of this error message is:
Device Connection Failed

Important: The USB Connection was not successful. If device is disconnected, please connect it back and select Try Again.

If you do not have Palm HotSync Manager, please quit this updater and install Palm HotSync Manager from the Palm Software CD.

If you do not have the Treo 680 CD, or cannot install HotSync Manager, you'll need to use an expansion card to install this update (see our IT/Enterprise instructions).

Not working yet?

If you have Palm Desktop installed, ensure the "Install" HotSync Conduit is enabled. The installer needs to use this conduit to update your smartphone.

  1. Right-click the HotSync icon in your Windows task bar and select the “Custom…” option from the menu.
  2. Locate the "Install" conduit and select "Change…"
  3. Change this conduit to "Install handheld applications" and select "Set as default."
  4. The conduit should now appear as shown.
  5. Select "Done" and try the update again.

Still having trouble?

After installing HotSync Manager, if you see this error, you may need to fix your USB sync cable connection:

  • Disconnect your smartphone from the sync cable, and connect it again. Then try the update.
  • If that doesn't work, try connecting to a different USB port.
  • Failing that, re-start your Windows desktop computer, and perform a soft reset on your smartphone.
  • If you're still having trouble, try re-installing Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager from your Treo 680 CD.

Further troubleshooting: try the suggestions in our HotSync troubleshooting guide.

Error: "Backup Failed ..."

The text of this error message is:
The update has been suspended because your device was not fully backed up. View a list of files that were not backed up.

How do you want to proceed? You can:

  • Continue with the update. Files that were not backed up will not be restored to your device when the update is complete.
  • Try again to back up your device.
  • Cancel the update. Your device will be unaffected.

This warning message may appear if the updater finds a component on your smartphone that it is unable to automatically back up and restore as part of the update process. If you receive this message, you should select the link to "View a list of files that were not backed up" and exam the contents.

Are the contents highly important? If so, you can:

  • Continue through the update realizing that these files will not be automatically restored. When the update is complete, you can perform a HotSync operation, and the contents should come back from your backup folder.
  • If you continue through the update and then perform a HotSync operation, and the contents do not come back, these contents were likely never backed up by synchronization in any way because of a limitation of the application or specifics of that content type.
  • If you are unsure, try using the Secure SD updater option.

If you choose to cancel the update,

You can try troubleshooting the HotSync process that backs up the information on your smartphone.

Once you've completed a successful HotSync operation, you can install the update again.

All your files, including those that were not restored, have been saved on your desktop computer at:
