SoftMagic Corp. Announces The Release of Satellite Forms, a custom forms
development tool for 3Com PalmPilot
Boca Raton, FL, July, 21 1997 -- SoftMagic announced the release of Satellite Forms™, a custom forms
development tool for the PalmPilot™ connected organizer from 3Com®. With Satellite Forms and PalmPilot,
you can create mobile solutions that are affordable, quick to implement and a highly effective way of keeping mobile
professionals connected. Rapid application development and effortless integration with desktop databases will allow
the use of PalmPilot for a wide assortment of jobs including sales automation, inspections, inventory control, field
service, patient records, and market research.
"Satellite Forms extends the capabilities of PalmPilot beyond personal information management. Satellite
Forms is a cost effective tool for corporations to deploy PalmPilot as a window to their mission-critical corporate
databases," said Ed Colligan, vice president of marketing at the Palm Computing subsidiary of 3Com.
Satellite Forms' seamless support for desktop database products (such as Microsoft Access and Visual Basic, Lotus
Notes and Approach and others), allows you to create tightly integrated forms-based solutions using the PalmPilot as
your carry-along data viewer/editor and the desktop PC as the main data repository. A PC may also serve as a link to
your enterprise mainframe database.
PalmPilot applications are created on your desktop with App Designer, Satellite Forms' visual development
environment. With App Designer, you create the user interface of your applications by dragging and dropping
various types of controls onto forms. You can use text, input and paragraph fields, buttons, checkboxes, radio
buttons, drop lists, ink fields, bitmaps and more to give the functionality and look you need. Advanced features
like table lookups and filtering, control actions, and the ability to link multiple forms allow you to make
extraordinarily versatile applications.
The data displayed by your PalmPilot comes from database tables on your PC that are also created with the
App Designer. Satellite Forms creates these tables in the industry standard dBase file format for easy integration
with popular desktop database products.
Satellite Forms' HotSync™ Extension ActiveX control gives your desktop database application complete control
over the data transfer between your desktop and PalmPilot. You can download new data to each PalmPilot based on the
device's user name, user ID or any other criteria you choose. You could even retrieve data entered by the user on
the PalmPilot, and based on the input, create custom data for that specific PalmPilot. Furthermore, new applications
and updated forms can also be downloaded during synchronization. What's best, to the end-user, it's as easy as a
push of PalmPilot's HotSync™ button -- no fussing with special downloading programs and no confusing importing
and exporting of text files. Satellite Forms also provides a DLL API for use with databases that donít support ActiveX
controls.
The PalmPilot is based on the Palm Operating System (Palm OS™), a handheld computer operating system platform
that enables low-cost, low-power, small form-factor devices to integrate seamlessly with desktop personal computers.
The Palm OS features highly efficient operating system software for the handheld, and HotSync, the desktop software
that manages synchronization with the PC.
The PalmPilot Professional Edition includes e-mail software, expense tracking software, a backlit screen, enhanced
PalmPilot PIM software, and 1MB of memory, and sells for $399. The PalmPilot Personal Edition features the same expense
management software, backlit screen, and enhanced PIM software. It includes 512K of memory, and sells for $299. For
