FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Adobe Systems, Palm Computing Intend To Integrate Adobe® Technologies
And Palm OS® Software For Electronic Book Market
Seybold Publishing Conference, Boston, Mass., February 7, 2000
- Adobe Systems (Nasdaq:ADBE) and Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com Company
(Nasdaq: COMS), announced an intention to integrate Adobe Portable Document
Format (PDF) technologies and the Palm Computing® platform geared
towards the growing consumer market for electronic publishing. This effort
signals an intent to bring a new level of convenience and portability
to Adobe's customers and to deliver Palm users with a wealth of new content,
from electronic books (e-books) to business workflow documents.
Publishers, authors and readers of electronic documents worldwide use
Adobe PDF for its ability to retain the visual integrity of a document,
preserve relevant information such as graphics and text within a single
document and maintain cross-platform capabilities. Tens of millions of
PDF files are already available worldwide, including electronic books,
manuals and workflow materials and forms.
"The addition of the Adobe PDF format to Palm's e-book and e-reading
capabilities will bring a new world of business and entertainment content
to handhelds based on the Palm Computing platform," said Mark Bercow,
vice president, Strategic Alliances and Platform Development for Palm
Computing. "This effort will enable customers to even more fully
realize the benefits of e-reading and to access the documents they need,
at any time and anywhere."
"As the world becomes more mobile and reliant on the Internet, people
must access and manage their documents on the go," said Joe Eschbach,
vice president, ePaper Solutions Group, Adobe Systems Incorporated. "Clearly,
Adobe PDF is the best format for graphically rich electronic documents
and publications no matter the device. We are pleased to be working with
Palm Computing in providing solutions that broaden access to the wealth
of Adobe PDF content available over the Internet."
