Palm Computing, Inc. Sponsors PGA Tour West Coast Swing Award
Becomes presenting sponsor of 2000 Touchstone Energy Tucson Open
Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and Santa Clara, CA -- February 11, 2000 - The PGA TOUR and Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company (NASDAQ:COMS), today announced an agreement that includes Palm's sponsorship of the 2000 Palm Performance Award, a $200,000 bonus that will go to the winner of the nine-tournament West Coast Swing.
By sponsoring this award, Palm will have presenting sponsor designation at the Touchstone Energy Tucson Open (Feb. 24-27) and participate in the presentation of the Palm Performance Award that same week either in Tucson, AZ or at the World Golf Championships-Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship in LaCosta, CA.
The Palm Performance Award doubles the bonus that Tiger Woods earned for winning the 1999 season's "King of the Swing" competition.
"We are very excited to be sponsoring this award for the PGA TOUR player who demonstrates consistent excellence in play," said Liz Brooking, Director of Marketing Communications for Palm Computing, Inc. "Palm is pursuing excellence, day-in and day-out, to provide our customers with a flawless and exhilarating experience. The Palm Performance Award embodies this philosophy, and we are pleased to work with the PGA TOUR to reward the player whose performance in the West Coast Swing best represents this ideal."
The West Coast Swing began with the Mercedes Championships the first week of January. There are four more tournaments to be played in February where the players' performance will make them eligible for this award. The World Golf Championships-Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship and Touchstone Energy Tucson Open run concurrently as the final two tournaments of the West Coast Swing.
The recipient of the Palm Performance Award will be determined by a point system for top-8 finishes. A victory is worth 100 points, followed by decreasing 10-point increments from 70 for second place through 10 for eighth. The player who accumulates the most points will receive both a $200,000 bonus and a Palm VII handheld computer, which features wireless access to Internet and e-mail.
Through last week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Woods is leading with 200 points, followed by Jesper Parnevik (180), Tom Lehman (127.5), Ernie Els (110) and Paul Azinger (100).
"The Palm Performance Award adds another element of excitement to the early portion of the PGA TOUR schedule," said Tom Wade, Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Business Development. "We are very pleased that Palm has agreed to sponsor this program with the TOUR."
