FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sybase to Fuel Growth by Expanding Focus on Mobile and Wireless Solutions
Forms New iAnywhere Solutions Subsidiary; Makes Significant Investments in Wireless Opportunities
Emeryville, Calif. - May 17, 2000 - As a part of its strategic corporate growth plans for mobile and wireless computing, Enterprise Portals and vertical solutions, Sybase, Inc., (NASDAQ: SYBS) today outlined an aggressive move to capitalize on its established leadership and fuel new growth opportunities in the mobile and wireless arena. Sybase today announced the formation of iAnywhere Solutions Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated to becoming the premier provider of mobile and wireless e-Business, or "m-Business," products and services.
"The formation of iAnywhere Solutions along with several other strategic investments in the wireless market unveiled today is expected to create more value for Sybase shareholders, customers and employees," said John Chen, chairman, president and CEO of Sybase, Inc. "This follows the formation of Financial Fusion Inc., another Sybase subsidiary created late last year, and is part of our plan to leverage Sybase's leadership position in key markets. The flexibility and focus enables Sybase to aggressively pursue new investment, partnership and technology opportunities in high growth markets."
iAnywhere Solutions will incorporate Sybase's Mobile and Embedded Computing division, and will be led by Terry Stepien, newly appointed president, reporting directly to Chen. Sybase's Mobile and Embedded Computing division has experienced rapid growth under Stepien's leadership, with 61 percent marketshare,* four-year market leadership* and more than five million deployed seats of its market leading mobile computing solution. "Currently fewer than five percent of corporations have actually enabled their applications for wireless users. We expect this to grow to 10-15 percent within one to two years, and 25-35 percent in two to three years," said Jack Gold, vice president of META Group. "Companies that fail to enable wireless extensions during the next 12-18 months risk losing customers to competitors that do. Most will require assistance in developing and deploying mobile extensions, as they lack the required resources and technical expertise (e.g., security, transcoding, analytics, synchronization, application integration)."
With the formation of iAnywhere Solutions, Sybase is well positioned to focus on strategic areas that will enable its leadership in the m-Business market. These areas include investment strategies, strategic alliances and partnerships, and technology research and development. Initial plans include:
- Investment Strategies
To accelerate the development of m-Business solutions, Sybase today introduced an "Innovation Fund" for wireless enterprise solutions, such as e-Commerce, e-Health and telecommunications (please see related announcement, "Sybase Announces $50 Million Investment Fund to Capitalize on Fast Moving e-Business Technology and Market Opportunities"). In addition, Sybase is making significant investments in iAnywhere Solutions' R&D, marketing, support and services worldwide, including facilities and personnel.
- Strategic Alliances and Partnerships
iAnywhere Solutions plans to pursue new strategic alliances and partnerships in support of emerging m-Business opportunities. This will build on Sybase's significant partner base of more than 500 mobile and embedded computing OEM partners, and community of more than 10,000 developers of its mobile technology.
- Technology Research and Development
In a related announcement, Sybase today also unveiled the iAnywhere Wireless Server, a new server-based product focused on enabling "always available" wireless solutions for the enterprise (please see "Sybase Brings Wireless Solutions to the Enterprise with New iAnywhere Wireless Server").
