Garmin Licenses Palm OS Software for Location-Enabled Handhelds
OLATHE, Kan. and SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ --
Garmin Corporation, a unit of Garmin Ltd. (Nasdaq: GRMN), a leading provider
of navigation, communication and information electronics, and Palm, Inc.
(Nasdaq: PALM), a leading provider of handheld computers, have entered into a
licensing agreement to incorporate Palm OS(R) software in a new line of
handheld products with Garmin's GPS hardware and software. Under the terms of
the agreement, Garmin Corporation will develop, manufacture and market
location-enabled handhelds that will be able to run the thousands of
applications available for the Palm OS platform, thus diversifying Palm
Powered(TM) handheld offerings.
"We are pleased to be a licensee of the Palm OS and look forward to
utilizing this technology in our location-enabled devices," said Gary Kelley,
director of marketing, Garmin International Inc. "Location technology is
becoming a key ingredient in mobile computing platforms. The convergence of
location technologies with Personal Information Management (PIM) and
communication functions will provide customers a higher level of convenience
and confidence, particularly when traveling to unfamiliar destinations."
"Palm looks for market leaders to expand the Palm(TM) Economy in new
directions," said Alan Kessler, chief operating officer for Products and
Platform at Palm, Inc. "Location-based services and wireless applications are
key components in our efforts to expand the Palm Economy. Garmin's leadership
and strength in GPS solutions will provide customers with handhelds that are
well-equipped to provide information about where they are, wherever they are."
Palm Powered products will complement Garmin's already broad line of
GPS-enabled products. In 1999, Garmin introduced the eMap(TM), a handheld
electronic map/GPS with the ability to locate addresses and points of
interest, such as hotels and restaurants. The eMap joined the family of more
than 50 models of GPS devices designed and manufactured by Garmin.
