Palm Launches in India Leading Handheld Provider Increases Global Presence
MUMBAI, India, May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM), a leading
provider of handheld computers and a pioneer in the field of mobile and
wireless Internet solutions, today announced the launch of Palm(TM) handheld
computers in India. The Palm m100, m105, color IIIc and popular Vx handhelds
will be available throughout the subcontinent at the end of May. "Palm already distributes its handheld computers to nine countries
throughout the Asia Pacific region. As early adopters to technology, India
should prove to be an exciting new market for Palm," said Daren Ng, Palm's
sales director for South Asia, Australia and New Zealand. "Palm's entry into
India strengthens our distribution strategy for worldwide availability. It is
a great opportunity for us to maximize our distribution networks and make our
high-quality handheld solutions accessible to people everywhere. India is
definitely a high-growth-potential area in the handheld category." Palm has appointed two local distributors to assist with the launch,
Ingram Micro India Limited and Tech Pacific Technology (India) Limited, both
of which will play a major role in the distribution of Palm products and
information in the region. "Ingram Micro and Tech Pacific were a natural choice. Given their
expertise in IT distribution, proven credentials, and vendor lists that
include some of the world's leading manufacturers of computer hardware and
software, we are extremely confident of reaching our customers across the key
metros in India," said Ng.
Palm Products
-- Palm m100 handheld -- With 2MB of memory and snap-on color faceplates,
the Palm m100 handheld is the stylish, customizable handheld perfect
for the entry-level user. It features all the standard Palm OS(R)
applications, including Date Book, Address Book, To Do List and Memo
Pad. The estimated street price for the Palm m100 is Rs (rupees)
8,000, exclusive of local taxes and levies.
-- Palm m105 handheld -- One of the latest additions to the Palm product
family, the m105 builds on the m100 with the same form factor and
faceplates, but with 8MB of memory and a stylish cradle. The m105 also
ships with the Palm Mobile Internet Kit, which provides Internet
connectivity via a compatible mobile phone or modem. The estimated
street price is Rs 11,500, exclusive of local taxes and levies.
-- Palm IIIc handheld -- The first color Palm handheld, the Palm IIIc has
a high-contrast, easy-to-read color display. Its 8MB of memory allows
users to store thousands of names, addresses, appointments, memos,
to-do items and expense items. The estimated street price is Rs
16,500, exclusive of local taxes and levies.
-- Palm Vx handheld -- The Palm Vx is Palm's ultraslim, ultralight
handheld. The sleek, stylish, anodized aluminum Palm Vx handheld
features 8MB of memory for add-on applications, appointments, to-do
items and memos. Its advanced display features razor-sharp clarity, and
its lithium-ion batteries recharge for up to a month of power. The
estimated street price is Rs 17,000, exclusive of local taxes and
levies.
Palm Mobile Internet Kit
Palm also will be shipping its Palm Mobile Internet Kit software in India,
which allows customers to connect wirelessly to the Internet, email and
instant-messaging features via a compatible mobile phone or modem.(1)
-- Web clipping technology enables Palm handheld users to access popular
web content in a format tailored for fast, comfortable handheld
viewing. More than 550 web clipping applications can be downloaded for
free at the Palm Asia website (www.palm-asia.com).
-- For email, the kit includes Palm MultiMail(R) software (POP3, IMAP4),
providing access to personal Internet email.
-- The kit also includes the Short Messaging Service (SMS) protocol, which
lets users send and receive messages to pagers and cellular phones
using a data-enabled mobile phone.
Software and Accessories
Palm handheld users can further customize and add to the functionality of
their handhelds with thousands of software applications available from
third-party developers in the Palm Economy. Users also can add on hardware accessories, including the following:
-- The Palm Portable Keyboard is a best-selling collapsible keyboard for
typing on-the-go. Users can take notes and manage email while on the
move with its full-size QWERTY key layout.
-- The Kodak PalmPix(TM) camera, available for the Palm m100, m105, IIIc
and Vx handhelds, snaps onto the handheld to capture vibrant, color,
VGA-quality digital pictures. It is small, sleek and ergonomic, and
photos can be uploaded to a computer via a HotSync(R) operation.
-- Palm modems, such as the Palm V modem and the PalmModem(R) Connectivity
Kit, are available for Palm IIIc and Vx handheld users to add further
connectivity to their handhelds.
-- The full range of Palm handheld cases also will be available, including
Slim Leather and Leather Flip cases. Also available is the popular
PalmGlove(TM) Neoprene case from BodyGlove.
