Palm Unveils Beta Desktop 4.0 Software for Mac OS X With Improved Desktop Synchronization For New Software
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM), the
leading provider of handheld computers, today announced Palm(TM) Desktop 4.0
software for Mac OS X. The new software offers native Mac OS X support,
improved handheld-to-desktop data compatibility, vCard and vCal support, and
the ability to use multiple languages. The free public beta web download is
now available at http://www.palm.com/macintosh . "This new desktop software offers Mac users more than improved
synchronization," said Todd Bradley, Palm executive vice president and chief
operating officer of the Solutions Group. "New features include connecting Mac
and Windows users, allowing them to share data and information. Specially
designed for Mac OS X, this software provides a simple and elegant Palm
Desktop solution." With Palm's new Desktop software, Mac OS X users can synchronize Palm
handhelds using different connections without manually changing the settings
each time. Users also now can use vCard and vCal, which allows them to share
data between previously incompatible products. "Seamless device connectivity and industry-leading applications make Mac
OS X the ultimate engine for the digital hub," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice
president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "Palm Desktop is an essential
application for many Mac users and it is important that our customers can
continue to use their preferred applications as they make Mac OS X their
primary computing platform." Palm developers such as FileMaker and Adobe are supporting the new desktop
software with updated Palm synchronization software for their popular Mac
programs. Palm customers using Palm Desktop 4.0 for Mac OS X will need to
contact their favorite software solution providers to request new Palm
synchronization software.
New Functionality -- Native Expansion, USB and Wireless Capabilities Palm Desktop software is included with every Palm handheld, giving
customers a way to easily add, edit, create and find their Palm handheld
information on their desktop. As the first release of Palm Desktop and
HotSync(R) Manager for Apple's next-generation operating system, Palm Desktop
4.0 for Mac OS X plans support for the following:
-- Improved Synchronization -- Improved synchronization and data
compatibility gives users a more consistent transfer of data between
their Palm handhelds and Palm Desktop software.
-- Native Mac OS X Support -- Mac OS X users no longer need to perform
their HotSync operations in the "Classic" environment.
-- vCard and vCal -- Mac Palm Desktop users can share data with Windows
Palm Desktop, Entourage X and Outlook 2000 users.
-- Multiple Languages -- Palm Desktop for Mac now can be viewed in six
languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.
-- Improved Privacy -- Private records on the handheld are now also
private on Palm Desktop.
-- Multiple Connection Types -- Multiple connection types can be used to
synchronize without having to switch between connection settings.
-- Mac OS 9 Functionality -- Although this software product requires
Mac OS X Version 10.1 for native Mac OS X support, Mac OS 9 users also
can install the software and take advantage of its benefits.

may be downloaded immediately at www.palm.com/macintosh .
