Palm Digital Media and Simon & Schuster Get Together to Launch Latest Book From Stephen King Kiosks in Midtown Manhattan
SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today announced that Palm Digital Media, the leading
publisher and distributor of eBooks for handheld computers, joins publishing
house Simon & Schuster in bringing an excerpt of Stephen King's latest
collection of short stories to pedestrians on the streets of Manhattan. For the next several weeks, New Yorkers with a Palm Powered(TM) handheld
can get a free excerpt from King's new book, "Everything's Eventual," by
pointing their handheld at one of the 100 kiosks set up on the sidewalks of
midtown Manhattan. Designed by interactive mobile media company Streetbeam,
Inc., in partnership with Viacom Outdoor, the kiosks are set up to beam
information quickly and easily to Palm Powered handhelds using infrared
signals. The hardcover edition and the eBook of King's "Everything's
Eventual," both published by Scribner, a division of Simon & Schuster, is
scheduled to be released today. The eBook for Palm Powered handhelds also is
scheduled to be available today at www.palm.com/ebooks. "This is a unique and fun way to introduce more people to eBooks and give
users of handheld computers a glimpse at the latest work from one of the
world's most popular authors," said Mike Segroves, director of business
development for Palm Digital Media. "Simon & Schuster is at the forefront of
an industry that is quickly recognizing the role this technology can play in
meeting the needs of increasingly mobile customers, and it is paving the way
for more exciting new book promotions for its authors." "Working with Palm Digital Media, Viacom Outdoor and Streetbeam lets us
communicate with readers in a way that was not possible before," said
Kate Tentler, vice president, Simon & Schuster Online. "It's a very exciting
time for the publishing industry as it begins to incorporate eBook and other
digital technologies into the many layers of its business, and for Simon &
Schuster as we break new ground with this promotional campaign." Palm Digital Media, named Best eBook Publisher for 2001 by Handheld
Computing Magazine, offers more than 4,000 eBooks from most major U.S.
publishing houses. The eBooks are available for reading with Palm Reader(TM),
