Palm Pays Back Loyal Customers Through New Referral Promotion Incentives to Reward Word-of-Mouth Referrals for Palm m130, m515 And i705 Handhelds

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- For all those Palm enthusiasts who wish they had a dollar for every time they recommended their Palm(TM) handheld to a friend or colleague, Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today announced the Palm Pays Back Promotion.

Effective March 20 to May 20, 2002, in the United States only, this innovative referral program rewards Palm customers who recommend Palm m130 and m515 color handhelds and Palm i705 wireless handhelds to friends, family and business associates. When the referred friend purchases one of these handhelds, the Palm Champion receives "Palm Bucks" that can be redeemed for specially selected Palm merchandise via a secure online Palm catalog.(1) The awards are: 45 Palm Bucks for each Palm i705 handheld purchased, 40 Palm Bucks for each Palm m515 handheld purchased, and 25 Palm Bucks for each Palm m130 handheld purchased. The maximum award is 500 Palm Bucks per person.

"Word-of-mouth has always been one of our most effective marketing benefits," said Ken Wirt, senior vice president of marketing at Palm, Inc. "The Palm brand remains No. 1 in the handheld market because of the tight-knit, passionate community of people who love Palm handhelds and recommend them to everyone they know. Now, with this program, we have an effective way to reward and motivate these Palm Champions with attractive incentives."

Palm enjoys unprecedented levels of loyalty and referral. Based on Palm satisfaction surveys, a remarkable 98 percent of Palm customers are satisfied with their Palm handheld computers and 97 percent are likely to recommend a Palm handheld to a colleague, friend or family member. Palm has sold more than 16 million Palm branded handhelds worldwide, giving it the largest installed base of any handheld company.

How It Works

Palm provides the materials necessary to make Palm m130, m515 and i705 handheld referrals quick and easy.

1. A Palm handheld user goes to the Palm website ( http://www.palm.com ) to review the detailed program description, rules and regulations. 2. The Palm handheld user enrolls in the program by filling out the enrollment form. 3. The Palm Champion now has access to a special Palm website that includes a toolbox and account status information. The toolbox contains four prescripted sample emails, flash demos and other materials to help a referred friend choose the right product for them. The account status page tracks the balance of Palm Bucks in the Palm Champion's account. 4. The Palm Champion sends a friend a Palm email, recommending a Palm product, along with specific instructions on how to register the product and report a purchase. 5. The referred friend buys a Palm m130, m515 or i705 handheld. Referred friends have the flexibility to buy a handheld wherever they choose. 6. After the Palm handheld purchase is complete, the friend goes to a special Palm website to register the new handheld and log the product serial number and email address of the Palm Champion. As an added bonus, the friend will receive free software, including games ("Bang! Bang!" and "Eye of Horus" by Astraware) and eBooks ("The Time Machine" by H. G. Wells and "Roughing It" by Mark Twain). 7. The Palm Champion is notified that their friend has purchased a Palm handheld, and that Palm Bucks have been awarded and are awaiting redemption in their account.

The Palm Champion now has Palm Bucks to spend on merchandise from Palm's online catalog. This catalog includes unique accessories, such as a Dooney and Bourke Palm m100 series black leather zipper case, and special handheld packages, such as a Palm m125 handheld with a PalmPak(R) Dictionary/Thesaurus expansion card and slim leather carrying case. Palm plans to add exclusive items to the catalog as well.

Palm plans to publicize this new promotion via email, via the Palm website ( http://www.palm.com ), and most important, via word of mouth.
