Palm Offers Server-side Software for Wireless Enterprise Information Management and Messaging Under Palm's New Tungsten Brand, Palm Solutions Group Offers Centrally Managed, Easy Access to E-mail, Groupware and Data

(Editor's note: This is the second of two releases Palm issued today, the first announcing Palm Solutions Group's new sub-branding strategy.)

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Building on its strong momentum in the enterprise, Palm Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today announced the availability of its Tungsten(TM) Mobile Information Management (MIM) Solution. At a time when 80 percent of today's chief information officers are using, testing or considering the implementation of a wireless handheld strategy, the Tungsten MIM Solution(TM) offers enterprises a complete and secure wireless email and groupware access solution that mobile workers need.(1)

Earlier this year, the Tungsten MIM Solution was introduced as the Palm(TM) Wireless Messaging Solution. This offering has since evolved to provide more than wireless email and is the first product to be announced under Palm's new business and professional subbrand, Tungsten. The solution provides secure access to corporate email, calendars, contacts, notes and tasks from leading collaborative systems like Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino. The solution also supports access to IMAP4 compliant email systems.

The Tungsten MIM Solution builds upon all the benefits of the Palm i705 wireless handheld(TM) -- because of the "always on" radio functionality, the device can receive "push" email and meeting requests.(2) Recognizing that there are different types of mobile users and laying the foundation for Palm's long-term strategy around Wireless LAN technology, the solution has been expanded to include support for access via WLAN technologies, specifically 802.11b, which is currently supported on the Palm m500 series via a Xircom Wireless LAN Module. The solution was built on top of Palm's Reliable Transport for Mobile Applications (RTMA), presently being used by BEA and IBM as part of strategic agreements previously announced this summer.

IT administrators benefit from Tungsten MIM Solution's central management, easy integration and comprehensive security. Mobile employees get an easy-to-use handheld collaboration solution -- receiving and sending email, wireless access to calendars, contacts, notes and tasks -- all in one solution.

The Tungsten MIM Solution also provides mobile workers with the ability to interact with important office documents while on the go. Users can download and view email attachments through the use of an included server-side attachment-processing platform. In addition, users can synchronize Microsoft Office documents through the cradle using DataViz's popular Documents-to-Go(TM) product bundled with the handheld.

To ensure end-to-end security of wireless communications, the Tungsten MIM Solution uses a combination of authentication, encryption and data integrity assurances. The cryptographic services used in the solution encrypt messages end-to-end using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and are pending FIPS certification. In addition, Security Plus, a bundled security client application, enables IT administrators to enforce security policies on the handheld including passwords and data encryption.

A new tool called the Enterprise Services Portal provides IT administrators with unparalleled control of their wireless accounts for Palm i705 handhelds. Along with activation, IT administrators can also swap and quarantine handhelds all from a single graphical interface. The Tungsten MIM Solution also offers a single source for comprehensive enterprise service and support.

"The Tungsten MIM Solution further delivers on Palm's promise to provide tools that empower our customers to take full advantage of their current data assets and improve their overall productivity," said Ken Wirt, senior vice president, marketing and product management, Palm Solutions Group. "Mobile enterprise employees that need it most are given access to critical enterprise data, allowing them to make better decisions, faster. Time saved, efficiency gained and ROI recognized by customers reinforces Palm's leadership in the wireless handheld market."

The complete Tungsten MIM Solution is comprised of the following components:

-- Palm i705 handhelds and/or m500 series handhelds with Xircom Wireless LAN Module; -- Mobile Information Management Server; -- Enterprise Services Portal; -- Maintenance and Support.

Pricing and Availability: Estimated U.S. Street Price of the MIM Server is $2,499 and will be generally available on Oct. 28 for Windows NT and 2000 platforms, a Solaris version will be available shortly after. The server includes 25 client licenses, and additional client license packs are available. Volume discounts will be available. Annual support and maintenance contracts are priced at 20 percent of the total license fee. Enterprise Palm.Net service will be available on a plan for $39.99/month. Volume service discounts also will be available.
