COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF HANDSPRING IN NCR LAW SUIT

Summary Judgment Granted in Patent Infringement Case

Mountain View, Calif. (July 12, 2002) —Handspring, Inc. (Nasdaq:HAND) today said that the U.S. District Court in Delaware ruled for the company in a patent infringement lawsuit filed by NCR Corp. last year. In issuing a July 11, 2002 order granting summary judgment in favor of Handspring, United States Magistrate Judge Mary Pat Thynge determined that Handspring did not infringe NCR's patents.

NCR filed suit against Handspring and Palm in March 2001, alleging that Handspring violated two NCR patents relating to data entry and synchronization on handheld devices. Judge Thynge said in a 67-page opinion that NCR's patents did not apply to Handspring's products or technology, concluding "that the defendants' devices do not infringe the asserted claims of the [NCR] patents."

Donna Dubinsky, Chief Executive Officer of Handspring, said, "As true innovators in the com-munications industry, Handspring vigorously protects its intellectual property and respects that of others. We will always aggressively fight meritless lawsuits, such as this one brought by NCR. Settlement of this case was never an option, despite the long process we knew it would take to obtain a favorable ruling."

The matters discussed in this press release involve risks and uncertainties, including the possibility that the U.S. District Court's ruling in favor of Handspring could be reversed if the case is appealed.
