Questions and answers.
What is a "native" file?
"Native" indicates that a file in its original desktop format, specifically Microsoft Word (.DOC), Excel (.XLS), or PowerPoint (.PPT), can be viewed on your device using the Documents To Go® 7 software suite.
Before native document support, Microsoft documents had to be converted on the desktop to a special format (Word To Go, Sheet To Go), and then synchronized to the device. But now, with native document support, no desktop conversion is needed, so you can immediately open files sent to you as email attachments, via the built-in Bluetooth® wireless software, or files on an expansion card.
An on-the-fly conversion still occurs on the device side to optimize the file for small-screen viewing. This is a temporary conversation, because when the file is closed it is still a .doc, .ppt or .xls file.
Can I use the optimized file format to save space?
If you choose to, you can still work with documents in a non-native format. This is helpful when you need to beam a large document to another Palm OS® device with limited space. It's also ideal when you want to save space on your own device.
How does mobile editing work?
When you edit a word processing document or spreadsheet on your device, you have the option to save the updated document as either a .doc/.xls file or a Word To Go or Sheet To Go file.
PC users can edit a PowerPoint presentation on their device. The file must first be converted to Slideshow To Go format on the desktop, then synchronized to the device. Saved edits are automatically merged into the original PowerPoint file during the next sync.
