Dial Up Networking (DUN)
Use your smartphone as a wireless modem

Surf the web on your laptop using your smartphone's Internet connection ¹ ²
Dial-up networking (DUN) is the feature that converts your smartphone into a modem³ so that you can access the Internet from your laptop computer. By connecting your smartphone to your laptop, you can surf the Internet, send and receive email using your favorite email application, and access files from a server — just as you would if you were using DSL, cable Internet, or Wi-Fi.

With this DUN connection, you shouldn't need to buy any extra hardware or carry a separate PC wireless data card. Note: A tethering plan from your service provider may be required at an additional cost above and beyond your current service plan. Please check with your service provider for more details.

Put the Internet on hold.
While you're using your smartphone as a modem, you should still be able to make and receive calls — the dial up networking connection will simply be suspended while your call is in progress.

Two ways to connect

With Bluetooth wireless technology, you don't need cords. Enjoy the freedom of wireless email and web on your laptop, using your smartphone as a modem.

For Bluetooth DUN, you don't need to install extra software. Simply configure the Bluetooth settings on your smartphone, prepare your laptop for the connection, and you're ready to go.

See your Treo 750 User Guide for details about setting up Bluetooth Dial Up Networking.

USB sync cable

Using your USB sync cable, you can "tether" your smartphone to a Windows computer, and use the smartphone as a modem. Your laptop will need to have a USB port (most do), and you'll need the USB sync cable that came with your smartphone.

You'll need to add Connection Manager software to your laptop. Your mobile service provider (right) furnishes this software, or, for some devices, you can use Palm's connection manager software.

Mac OS note: Smartphones do not support USB Dial-Up Networking with Mac computers. Instead, please use Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your Mac.
