Backup Plus Update
(also works with MDM Secure File PDA Backup and Mobile Backup cards)

Posted December 20, 2004

This update works on three backup expansion cards: the Palm 64MB Backup Plus card, the MDM Secure File PDA Backup card, and the MDM Mobile Backup card. It is not intended for other expansion cards.

The update does two things:

  • Adds compatibility for the three backup cards above when used with the new file system (NVFS) in Tungsten T5 and Treo 650 devices. Without the update, these cards do not work with the new file system.
  • Addresses an incompatibility between the Palm 64MB Backup Plus card and the Zire 71 and Tungsten series handhelds. The incompatibility creates a condition where backed-up data cannot be restored. Once the update is complete, the backup data on the card can be successfully restored, and successive backups can be restored without issue.

This update replaces key application files on the cards noted above and cannot be reversed once applied. However, the update will not delete nor modify any previously backed-up data on the card.

System Requirements

The Backup Plus Update requires the following minimum system requirements: This update requires any combination of the following:

  • Operating system:
    • PC running Windows 98/NT 4.0/2000/Me/XP
    • Mac OS X (version 10.1.2 or higher)
    • Mac OS 9 (version 9.1 and higher)
  • Backup card:
    • Palm 64MB Backup Plus card
    • MDM Secure File PDA Backup card*
    • MDM Mobile Backup card*
  • Palm device:
    • Tungsten T5, T3, T2, T, W, C, or E
    • Treo 650
    • Zire 71, 72

* Do I need this update? If you have a card from MDM and a Zire 72 or 71, or Tungsten T3, T2, T, W, C or E handheld, you don't need this update. That's because the incompatibility it addresses exists only between these handhelds and the Palm 64MB Backup Plus card. But if you use a Treo 650 or Tungsten T5 with any of the three cards listed above, you should install this update; these cards need the update to become compatible with the new file system in Treo 650 and Tungsten T5.

Important: Applying the update to other handhelds and/or to any expansion cards not listed above may cause loss of functionality.

Windows Installation

If you are a Windows user, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure your device is fully charged.
  2. Ensure the backup card has at least 200K free and is inserted into the device.
  3. Download the BackupPlusUpdate_v2.zip file.
  4. Extract the BackupPlusUpdate.zip file using a standard unzip utility. Note the location where the directory/folder is extracted.
  5. Launch the Palm Quick Install application on your desktop computer. (Given changes in Palm Desktop for certain new Palm handhelds, be sure that you are using the version of Palm Desktop that came bundled with your handheld)
  6. Ensure that the correct user name is selected in the User list.
  7. Click the Add button.
  8. Locate the following files in the directory/folder noted in Step 4 above and double-click on each one to add it to the Palm Quick Install tool:
    • Backup Plus.prc
    • Backup Plus_deDE.prc
    • Backup Plus_enUS.prc
    • Backup Plus_esES.prc
    • Backup Plus_frFR.prc
    • BackupPlus_itIT.prc
    • Backup Plus_ptBR.prc
    • BPlusUpd.prc

IMPORTANT: Drag all of these files from installation queue under Handheld to Expansion Card.
  9. Place your handheld in the cradle and synchronize your device to the computer. The Backup Plus Update will be installed onto the backup card.
NOTE: If your device is in a state where the HotSync operation will not complete, follow the instructions "Installing the update if the HotSync operation fails" below to install the update.
  10. On your device, launch the BPlusUpd application from the "home" application launcher screen. Do not remove the card during the update process.
  11. A dialog box will confirm when the update is complete. Once complete, you should safely eject the backup card.
  12. To maximize the space available for backups on the backup card, you should delete the BPlusUpd application. From the “home” application launcher screen, tap the on-screen Menu button and choose “Delete” from the App menu (or enter /D in Graffiti 2). Change "Delete From" to the backup card, tap once on BPlusUpd in the list of applications, then tap the Delete button. Confirm your selection in the Delete Application dialog box to finish.
  13. Launch the Backup Plus application.
  14. The Backup Plus application is updated and you can now successfully backup and/or restore.

Macintosh Installation

If you are a Macintosh user, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure your device is fully charged.
  2. Ensure the backup card has at least 200K free and is inserted into the device.
  3. Download the BackupPlusUpdate_v2.sit file.
  4. Your web browser should automatically expand the file, and you will see the appropriate files appear on the desktop (or in your default download directory). If your web browser does not expand the file automatically, you will need to use an expanding utility (such as Aladdin StuffIt Expander) in order to extract the files from the .sit file.
  5. Once the .sit file is expanded, double-click to open the BPUpdate folder.
  6. Double-click on each file in the BPUpdate folder. The files should show up in the install screen.
  7. In the "Install Handheld Files" screen, ensure that the correct user name is selected from the User drop-down menu. Also ensure you install each file to the expansion card and not to the handheld by clicking on the “Change Destination” button. Make sure all files are listed under the heading "SecureDigital (SD) Card".
  8. Place your handheld in the cradle and synchronize your device to the computer. The Backup Plus Update will be installed onto the backup card. If your hotsync operation cannot compete, follow the instructions below.
  9. On your handheld device, launch the BPlusUpd application from the "home" application launcher screen. Do not remove the card during the update process.
  10. A dialog box will confirm when the update is complete. Once complete, you should safely eject the backup card.
  11. To maximize the space available for backups on the backup card, you should delete the BPlusUpd application. From the "home" application launcher screen, tap the on-screen Menu button and choose "Delete" from the App menu (or enter /D in Graffiti 2). Change "Delete From" to the backup card, tap once on BPlusUpd in the list of applications, then tap the Delete button. Confirm your selection in the Delete Application dialog box to finish.
  12. Launch the Backup Plus application.
  13. The Backup Plus application is updated and you can now successfully backup and/or restore.

  1. Right click on the HotSync icon in your desktop system tray.
  2. Select Custom…
  3. Verify that the user name for your device appears in the dropdown menu near the top of the dialog box.
  4. Select Calendar then click on the Change button.
  5. Select "Do Nothing". NOTE: Do NOT select "Set as Default".
  6. Repeat step 4 with Contacts, Tasks, and Memos.
  7. Perform the HotSync operation, then return to step 10 in the Windows instructions above.
