Palm Support for Microsoft® ActiveSync®

What is Microsoft ActiveSync?
ActiveSync acts as the gateway between your Windows-based PC and Windows Mobile-based smartphone, enabling the transfer of Outlook information, Office documents, pictures, music, videos and applications to and from your device. In addition, ActiveSync can synchronize wirelessly with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 to keep your email, calendar data, tasks and contact information updated when you're away from your PC.

Which version should I use?
Your smartphone’s Getting Started CD may include an earlier version of ActiveSync. Version 4.5 is available for download from Microsoft's website. Both versions are compatible with your smartphone.

Note: The Treo 750 update to Windows Mobile 6 requires ActiveSync 4.5.

ActiveSync vs. Exchange ActiveSync

ActiveSync is software for your desktop PC. When you connect your smartphone to its USB cable and sync, it's done through ActiveSync.

Exchange ActiveSync is a server-side technology that lets you sync email, calendar, and contacts remotely with Exchange rather than using a desktop PC with a USB cable. Wireless synchronization is done with Exchange ActiveSync.

The ActiveSync technologies let you:

  • Maintain accurate, updated information by synchronizing your smartphone, desktop computer, and/or network server.
  • Automatically identify the most recent information by comparing the data on your smartphone with the data on your desktop PC and/or the network server. All locations are updated so that they contain the most recent information.
  • Access the Internet and other network resources from your mobile device.

Troubleshooting ActiveSync

Palm's website can help you with ActiveSync issues that stem from Palm software. If you need help with add-on software, contact the third-party developer for help.

USB ActiveSync problems are usually caused by one of these issues:

  • You connected your smartphone to your desktop PC before you installed ActiveSync. If you do this, an incorrect network device driver is installed.
  • You have incorrect settings in the ActiveSync software.
  • Security or other software is blocking the TCP/IP ports used by ActiveSync.

Wireless Exchange ActiveSync problems are usually caused by one of these:

  • You have incorrect program settings: server name, account credentials (cannot be UPN format), user name or password.
  • The Exchange 2003 Server is set up incorrectly for Exchange ActiveSync.
  • The smartphone is having a problem connecting to the wireless network or to the Internet.
