Palm AppCheck for the Palm Tungsten T Handheld

Posted December 2, 2002
With the exciting changes included on the Palm Tungsten T (OS 5.0, ARM processor, 320x320 Hi Res Display), some existing products may not function properly because they were not designed to support the features available in your new handheld. Some products may demonstrate behavior that will prevent the product from operating in the manner in which it was designed. These behaviors can range from slow performance, unique screen display, difficulties using Bluetooth, uneven sound quality, to causing the device to reset when an application is launched. Palm has worked extensively with the third party developer community to ensure compatibility, however, it is not possible to reach the thousands of products available for Palm handhelds. To help users, Palm has created an application to help identify and easily remove known incompatible products from their handhelds.
How it Works
The Palm AppCheck for the Palm Tungsten T handheld is an application that searches the device's internal memory and, if available, expansion cards to identify products that may be Incompatible. Products will be listed as either Incompatible or Unknown. A product listed as incompatible may not function properly with the Tungsten T. If a product is listed as unknown, App Checker cannot determine if the product is compatible or incompatible. Users should go to the developer's website to learn more.
When running AppCheck, you can run it for your handheld as well as any number of expansion cards. However, AppCheck only checks one source (an expansion card or the handheld at a time), so users will need to run AppCheck for their handheld, then for each expansion card.
If you wish to delete a product, select the checkbox to the left of the product name. Then tap the on screen Delete button to delete.
Windows Installation
If you are a Windows user and have downloaded the AppCheck.zip (39KB ZIP) file:
- Extract the files using a standard unzip utility. Note the location of the directory/folder the file is extracted to.
- Launch Palm Desktop. Select the Install Tool icon.
- Select the correct user name from the User list.
- Select the Add button.
- Locate the AppCheck.prc file in the directory/folder noted in Step 1 above and double-click on it.
- Once again, select the Add button.
- Locate the AppCheck.pdb file in the same directory/folder noted in Step 1 above and double-click on it.
- Select Done.
- Select OK.
- During the next HotSync synchronization, both files will be installed to the handheld.
Note: You can eliminate step 6 and 7 if you select both files at the same time and click on Open. Click on the AppCheck.prc file and while holding down the Ctrl button, click on the AppCheck.pdb to select both files.
Macintosh Installation
If you are a Macintosh user and have downloaded the AppCheck.sit (38KB SIT) file:
- Your web browser should decode the file and you will see the appropriate .sit file appear on the desktop (or in your default download folder). If your web browser does not decode the file automatically, you will need to use a decoding utility (such as Aladdin Stuffit Expander) in order to decode the .sit file.
- Find the Instant Palm Desktop icon in the top right corner of your screen. From the Instant Palm Desktop menu, launch the HotSync Manager.
- From the HotSync menu of the Instant Palm Desktop, select "Install" and pick the correct user name from the User list.
- Select Add to List. Locate the AppCheck.prc and double-click on it. Then locate the AppCheck.pdb file and double-click on it.
- Quit HotSync Manager. The files will be installed during your next HotSync operation.
