Treo™ 750 Smartphone Audio Alerts Update

Posted July 19, 2007

Occasionally the Treo 750 can enter a state where sounds are lost for phone calls and notifications. This can result in missed calls and notifications.

Please read below to find out how to upgrade your device to help eliminate the occurrence of this scenario on your Treo 750.

A knowledge base article describing how to troubleshoot the Loss of Audio Alerts and notifications can be found here.

Why does a loss of audio occur?

The root cause of the Treo 750 losing Audio Alert capabilities is too many applications utilizing the audio driver. In certain situations when the user activates too many applications that need to share the device audio driver, system sounds and notification sounds can become muted. These applications can include the device Notes Recorder, the Vibrate Motor, Voice Command, Windows Media Player, and/or the camera/video recorder.

All of these applications need to resource the audio driver, and when too many are used simultaneously and an incoming call is made or an alarm is triggered, the device audio driver gets overloaded. In this state, the sound functionality enters a suspend loop, and the sounds do not play.

A residual effect of the Loss of Audio Alerts can manifest itself in the camera/video recorder not functioning correctly. This is due to the fact that this application also accesses the audio driver and therefore can also enter a suspend loop.

How does this software update keep the device from experiencing the Loss of Audio Alerts?

Following the steps below to install the Audio Alerts Update will ensure that all system sounds on your device will remain audible for incoming calls, notifications, recordings (audio and video), and any device functionality that will access the audio driver. This software upgrade will allow the Treo 750 to maintain all application calls to the audio driver and therefore avoid the applications from entering the suspend state loop.
