Treo 650 Updater 1.17
AT&T, including former Cingular Wireless

Posted March 8, 2006

If you are not a AT&T (including former Cingular) customer, do not download this version of the software. It contains carrier-specific requirements that are incompatible with non-AT&T phones. Not an AT&T customer? Click here for the appropriate Treo 650 Updater.

What is the Treo 650 Updater 1.17?

The Treo 650 Updater 1.17 offers these performance enhancements for your smartphone:

  • Includes VersaMail 3.1D, the latest version, which includes an updated Mail Service (ISP) list.
  • Adds support for Gmail attachment downloads via web browser
  • Optimizes Bluetooth performance for some Motorola headsets and other car kits
  • Adds voice quality enhancements.
  • Optimizes memory handling
  • Correctly saves Auto-off power setting. This addresses an issue experienced by some users after installing updater version 1.15
  • Adds an audible beep to indicate call initiation failures
  • Improves battery life by automatically turning off screen after 30 seconds of a call (originally included in Treo 650 Update 1.15). The power savings will vary depending on usage patterns. To turn the display back on at any time, tap the screen. Do not press the red Power/End button, unless you want to end the call. The screen-off feature applies to handset mode only, not speakerphone or headset modes.
  • Incorporates three software patches previously released on Palm's website:
    • Treo 650 Updater 1.15 (released July 2005): Provides non-volatile file system improvements (info); includes "Get Good" application which facilitates faster, wireless installation of Good Technology’s GoodLink email software for business customers
    • Carkit Update for Treo 650 (Bluetooth carkit drivers)
    • Treo 650 Voicemail Updater 1.04
  • Updates bundled third-party software (Windows only): If any of these bundled applications are on your smartphone, the installer will replace them with versions compatible with the Treo 650 Update. This process is manual for Macintosh customers.

What you need to know before you start

Caution: Performing this update will erase all data on your smartphone and revert it to a factory state. Follow the directions to ensure data normally backed up during a HotSync operation is saved. After the update is complete, this data will be restored from these backups.

Do you need this update?
  1. Press Phone/Send .
  2. Press Menu .
  3. From the Options menu, select Phone Info.
  4. On the Phone Info screen, look for the Software item. If both of the following are true, you need this update:
    • The version number is lower than x.17
    • The end of the string says CNG, CNB or CNA. If you see something else, click here for the appropriate Treo 650 Updater.

What to expect

The Treo 650 Updater 1.17 will change the permanent (ROM) software in your smartphone. Please set aside 20 to 30 minutes to complete the process.

Here's what happens during the upgrade:

  1. You perform a regular HotSync operation to ensure you have a current backup of the smartphone data you normally save to your desktop computer
  2. The updater is transferred to your smartphone and runs automatically
  3. All data and applications are erased while the device's ROM is upgraded
  4. A second HotSync operation restores the data that was backed up earlier

System requirements

  • AT&T, (including former Cingular) Treo 650 smartphone (including former AT&T Wireless accounts).
    • Not compatible with smartphones purchased as Unlocked GSM, even if you are using AT&T service. The end of the Software string (see above) needs to be CNA, CNB or CNG.
    • If you contacted AT&T to unlock your smartphone (subsidy unlock), you can use this updater. The current lock state is not affected by the updater.
  • Windows 2000/XP or Mac OS 10.2.6 to 10.4.x
  • HotSync Manager 6.0.1 or greater (Windows), or 3.2.1 (Mac). This is part of the Palm Desktop installation included on your Treo 650 smartphone CD.
  • No SD or MMC expansion card in smartphone. If you run the updater while an expansion card is inserted, you will see an error message.
  • Must be installing the update on a computer with which the Treo 650 smartphone is synchronized (i.e. a user folder for the smartphone exists on the computer).
  • Connect your smartphone to the AC adapter and the HotSync cable, and keep them both connected throughout the update:

Making sure your data is backed up

Because the Treo 650 Updater erases all personal data on your smartphone, take these precautions to ensure that your data will be restored after the update.

  • Wireless email and calendar
If you use applications that get information wirelessly only, such as Exchange ActiveSync, be sure to perform a manual sync prior to updating your device.

  • Photos and videos
When you first set up your Treo 650, you should have installed software from the Treo 650 CD, including a Media conduit that backs up your smartphone's photos and videos. The web download of Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager does not include the Media conduit. How can you tell if you have it?
    1. Launch Palm Desktop on your desktop computer (even if you sync with Outlook).
    2. From the User: menu at the top right, select your Treo 650's user name.
    3. On the left side of the screen, you should see an icon for Media. Click it.
    4. Make sure that the photos and videos on your smartphone are displayed in Palm Desktop.
If your photos and videos are not being backed up when you sync, you'll need to copy them to an SD expansion card before updating. Remember: when you update, any items that were not backed up will be lost.

  • Third-party backup utilities
Some third-party applications change the way your smartphone backs up data. Other third-party applications do not back up data. If you have third-party software on your device, please contact the developer to learn what components are backed up during a HotSync operation, and if HotSync conduits are altered. Any data not backed up will be lost.

  • Exit or disable any third-party programs that control installations
If you use add-on software that watches new software installations and controls them, such as Uninstall Manager, we recommend you disable this software before installing the Treo 650 Updater.

  • Exit third-party launcher applications
Before running the updater, exit any launcher applications on your smartphone, such as SilverScreen, ZLauncher or Launcher X. The Treo 650 Updater was designed to work with the built-in Palm OS launcher only.

  • Do not back up and restore through an SD/MMC expansion card
Some customers use an expansion card to make backups of the smartphone's entire contents, but for this update, please forego the card backup and perform the HotSync operations as instructed. Otherwise, you may see looping resets or other unexpected behavior. When the update is complete and your data has been restored through synchronization, you may resume using an expansion card for backups.

  • Note for GoodLink, Xpress Mail and others
    • GoodLink: Click here for instructions to back up your GoodLink applications and provisioning data before proceeding with the updater.
    • Xpress Mail and others: Do you use a corporate wireless email client to link to your Microsoft Exchange (Outlook), Lotus Notes or other account? Most corporate email solutions have special back-up procedures to ensure the highest level of security. Please contact your wireless email vendor or IT helpdesk to get the appropriate back-up instructions before proceeding.
