What you need to know before you start
Caution: This update will erase all data on your smartphone and revert it to a factory state. Follow the directions to ensure data normally backed up during a HotSync operation is saved. After the update is complete, data will be restored from these backups.

What to expect
The Treo 650 Updater 1.20 will change the permanent (ROM) software in your smartphone. Please set aside 20 to 30 minutes to complete the process.
Here's what happens during the upgrade:
- You perform a regular HotSync operation to ensure you have a current backup of the smartphone data you normally save to your desktop computer
- The updater is transferred to your smartphone and runs automatically
- All data and applications are erased while the device's ROM is upgraded
- A second HotSync operation restores the data that was backed up earlier
System requirements
- Unlocked GSM Treo 650 smartphone. If you contacted your mobile service provider to unlock your smartphone (subsidy unlock), install the Treo 650 Updater version specific to your carrier: get it here.
- Smartphone purchased in North America, English only. If you purchased your smartphone outside of North America, select a country or region to get the appropriate updater information.
- Windows 2000/XP or Mac OS X 10.2.6 to 10.4.x
- Mac only: SD or MMC expansion card with at least 20MB free space
- Smartphone connected to AC adapter and the HotSync cable throughout the update:

Making sure your data is backed up
This updater erases all personal data on your smartphone. Make certain it will be restored after the update.
- Wireless email and calendar
Wireless-only applications, such as Exchange ActiveSync, require a manual sync before updating your device.
- Photos and videos
The Treo 650 CD includes a Media conduit that backs up your photos and videos. The web download of Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager does not include the Media conduit. How can you tell if you have this conduit?
- Launch Palm Desktop on your desktop computer (even if you sync with Outlook).
- From the User: menu at the top right, select your Treo 650's user name.
- On the left side of the screen, you should see an icon for Media. Click it.
- Make sure that the photos and videos on your smartphone are displayed in Palm Desktop.
If your photos and videos are not being backed up when you sync, you'll need to copy them to an SD expansion card before updating. Remember: any items that were not backed up will be lost.
- Third-party backup utilities
Some third-party applications change the way your smartphone backs up data. Other third-party applications do not back up data. If you have third-party software on your device, please contact the developer to learn what components are backed up during a HotSync operation, and if HotSync conduits are altered. Any data not backed up will be lost.
- Exit or disable any third-party programs that control installations
If you use add-on software that watches new software installations and controls them, such as Uninstall Manager, disable it before updating.
- Exit third-party launcher applications
Before updating, exit any launcher applications on your smartphone, such as SilverScreen, ZLauncher or Launcher X. The Treo 650 Updater was designed to work with the built-in Palm OS launcher only.
- Do not back up and restore through an SD/MMC expansion card
Some customers use an expansion card to make backups of the smartphone's entire contents, but for this update, please perform the HotSync operations as instructed. Otherwise, you may see looping resets.
- Note for GoodLink, Xpress Mail and others
- GoodLink: Click here for instructions to back up your GoodLink applications and provisioning data before proceeding with the updater.
- Xpress Mail and others: Do you use a corporate wireless email client to link to your Microsoft Exchange (Outlook), Lotus Notes or other account? Most corporate email solutions have special back-up procedures to ensure the highest level of security. Please contact your wireless email vendor or IT helpdesk to get the appropriate back-up instructions before proceeding.
Download & Install
Remember, you must use a PC or Mac to download the software; you cannot install this updater wirelessly.
Things to do after the update: restore your data and troubleshoot updater issues
Caution: Performing this update will erase all data on your smartphone and revert it to a factory state. Follow the directions to ensure data normally backed up during a HotSync operation is saved. After the update is complete, this data will be restored from these backups.
