System Requirements
  • Palm Treo 700w or 700wx smartphone for Verizon Wireless. *
  • Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, or Windows Vista
  • Internet Explorer version 6 or higher on desktop PC
  • ActiveSync 4.2 or later installed for Windows 2000 or XP (WMDC installed for Vista)
  • Smartphone must have at least 4MB of Program Memory & 4MB of Storage Memory available.
  • Smartphone must be connected to AC power adapter and the sync cable throughout the update.
* Note - This software will not work on any other Windows Mobile devices

What does this update do?

The Treo 700w/wx Updater 1.22 installs the latest software on your smartphone. It is designed to update your device while preserving your data. In some instances, user set preferences may not be retained after updating.

This update is designed for both the Palm Treo 700w and the Palm Treo 700wx running on the Verizon Wireless network.

On the Treo 700w, this update features:

  • High-speed dial up networking (DUN) – use your Treo smartphone as a wireless modem for fast web access virtually anywhere1. Supports USB and Bluetooth connections.
  • Advanced audio support (A2DP) – listen to the clear sounds of high-definition audio with new support for Bluetooth stereo headsets.
  • Today Screen enhancements – one-touch access to the Speakerphone and Mute control buttons gives you more freedom than ever.
  • Hands-free enhancements – Drive safely and work more efficiently. Get support for even more Bluetooth carkits and the Palm wired carkit.
  • Abbreviated dialing preferences – save time with the international dialing prefix and abbreviated dialing for campus environments.

On the 700wx, this update features:

  • Update Registry settings for Bluetooth stereo headsets (A2DP) and Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking (DUN) support.
  • Additional Daylight Savings Time features.

Do you need this update?

  1. Press Start . Select Settings.
  2. Select the System tab. Open About. Go to the Phone tab.
    • Use the 5-way to scroll down and change the focus box off of the Software Version. Ensure the software version is clearly visible.
  3. Look at the Software Version. If you see:
    • TREO700W-1.02-VZW
      A Full update is necessary and will take approximately 35 minutes.
    • TREO700W-1.10-VZW
      A Full update is necessary and will take approximately 35 minutes.
    • TREO700WX-1.20-VZW
      A Full update is necessary and will take approximately 35 minutes.
    • TREO700WX-1.22-VZW
      A Partial update is necessary and will take approximately 10 minutes.
    • TREO700WX_-1.22-VZW
      (includes the underscore "_" as illustrated in the image to the right.) No update is necessary.

Before you start

Do not stop the update before it is finished. It is possible for your device to become unusable if the update process is interrupted during a critical phase.

Running applications or browsing the internet on the desktop PC during the update is not advised. Ensure that ActiveSync is not currently synchronizing before running the update. These activities may interfere with the updater process.

Do ... Do Not ...
  • Have ActiveSync 4.2 or higher (WMDC for Vista users) installed on your PC.
  • Connect your smartphone to the USB ActiveSync cable and complete a synchronization before installing the update. ActiveSync should say "Connected" with the green icon, but not be currently synchronizing, when you run the update.
  • Connect the cable directly to a USB port on your desktop PC. Docking stations and USB hubs may interfere with the upgrade process.
  • Turn off antivirus software, screen savers and power saving on your desktop PC.
  • If using a laptop, ensure it has power for at least 60-90 minutes.
  • Ensure your smartphone has at least 4MB of Program Memory & 4MB of Storage Memory available.(how to check).
  • Turn off any passwords on the device (info).
  • Disable the ActiveSync option to "sync items as they arrive" if you are using it; instead, set your device to sync on a schedule or not at all during the update.

IT professionals: See these step-by-step instructions for deploying more than one device:

  • Pick up or move your smartphone during the update. This can cause the cable to lose connection and halt the update.
  • Lock or suspend your desktop PC during the update.
  • Use Bluetooth wireless to connect with your desktop PC during the update; instead, use the USB ActiveSync cable.
  • Remove the sync cable during the update.
  • Remove the battery from your smartphone during the update.
  • Remove the power adapter cable during the update.
  • Sprite Backup users: Do not perform a full restore from backups you made before updating your smartphone. If you use the Advanced restore features, do not restore the registry from pre-update backups.
