What is the Tungsten T5 Update v1.1?
The Tungsten T5 Update 1.1 adds enhancements that provide increased stability and reliability, as well as improved memory management on your handheld.
New in version 1.1:
- Resolves problems caused when synchronizing large databases and files
- Fixes problems in the Calendar relating to Birthdays or recurring notes
- Fixes an issue with the Find feature and Calculator application
- Provides non-volatile file system improvements
Also included from version 1.0 (released October 2004):
- Fixes a problem in the Calendar that can cause a crash when the default view is changed from Agenda to Month View
- Fixes an issue in Contacts when using the Menu drop down list for new entries
- Adjusts the Palm OS® soft keyboard to prevent system instability in certain situations
IMPORTANT: If you are using a Chinese language device, do NOT install this software. A Chinese language version of this update is not available at this time.
Do I need the Tungsten T5 Update?
Your Tungsten T5 handheld may already include these enhancements. To find out:
- On your handheld, launch the Memos application.
- Create a new Memo.
- Write the Graffiti Short Cut stroke
 , then period, then the number 9:

- A date will appear.
- If the date is before Fri 06/03/2005 0, you do need the Tungsten T5 Update.
- If the date is Fri 06/03/2005 0 or after, you don't need the Tungsten T5 Update.
What to expect
The Tungsten Update v1.1 will change the permanent (ROM) software in your Tungsten T5. Please set aside 20 minutes to complete the process.
Here's what happens during the upgrade:
- Your handheld’s user name is identified
- Your personal data is backed up on your PC or Mac
- The updater is installed on your handheld
- The ROM updater runs automatically on your handheld
- All your personal data and applications are erased from the handheld
- The ROM software is upgraded
- A second HotSync operation restores the personal data and applications that were backed up earlier
System Requirements
- Tungsten T5 handheld
- Windows® 2000/XP or Mac OS® 10.2.6 to 10.3.x
- HotSync® Manager 6.0.1 or greater (Windows), or 3.2.1 (Mac). This is part of the Palm™ Desktop installation included on your Tungsten T5 CD. Get the latest Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager.
- Tungsten T5 battery fully charged.
- At least 16.7MB/16,700KB free memory on your Tungsten T5 handheld (how to tell how much free memory you have). The free memory accommodates the update software on your device; the software will be removed from your device (and the memory freed) when the update is complete.
- Must be installing the update on a computer with which the Tungsten T5 handheld is synchronized (i.e. a user folder for the handheld exists on the computer).
- Must synchronize with your current user name. You may have several user names stored on your desktop computer. Make sure you synchronize with the user name on your Tungsten T5 handheld, or you will appear to lose data.
Caution: Performing this update will erase all data on your Tungsten T5 handheld and revert it to a factory state (both Program Memory and Internal Drive). Follow the directions below to back up the information in your handheld's Program Memory and Internal Drive. After the update is complete, you will restore your data to your handheld from these backups.
Some third-party applications change the way your handheld backs up data. Other third-party applications do not back up data. If you have third-party software on your device, please contact the developer to learn what components are backed up during a HotSync operation, and if HotSync conduits are altered. Any data not backed up will be lost.
